I am surprising my dad with a flight to jamaica, but I want to use my aeroplan card to collect points. Can I do that if I'm not actually the one travelling? If so, then I will spend extra cash to put him on air canada, otherwise I'll purchase a cheaper flight...thanks for anyone's help!

No, only the flyer earns the points.

Only the person who is flying earns the points. So if your father also collects Aeroplan miles, he would be able to get the miles.

I have always known it to be true that the miles are awarded to the person who purchases the tickets...

YES....butThe only way you could get the miles is for him to sign up for the frequent flyer program and then transfer the miles to your account.Also...make sure that the frequent flyer number appears on his ticket when he checks in!
